In 1907, Bixby was founded by J.W. Witherspoon and his wife, Gertrude. The town was named after the Native American Chief Cimarron who had been killed in a skirmish with white settlers. The Witherspoons were the first residents of Bixby and soon started a grocery store and post office. In 1912, they built a new home which still stands today. They also started the first agricultural school in Oklahoma and developed a small rural community by creating roads and selling goods from their store. By 1925, Bixby had grown to over 100 residents and became an important center for trade within the state. In 1933, Gertrude died suddenly and J.W. went into retirement age at 75 years old; however, he continued to live in Bixby until his death in 1986; he is buried at Sidereal Cemetery in Bixby."
