Prior to this time, female citizens had been limited to serving as school nurses or domestic servants; both these positions held no real power or clout within their respective townships outside of their individual households’ control. In 1926, construction began on what would become its first schoolhouse; however, due to financial difficulties the school never opened and remained abandoned until 1949 when it was replaced by a new building that still stands today. In 1939, Bixby became home to America's first Municipal Court after being organized by then Mayor Harry Crouch Jr.; during World War II it served as an airfield Auxiliary Landing Ground (ALG) for Army Air Forces pilots training at nearby Fort Sam Houston Air Base; later it housed various government agencies including those responsible for health care services within Noble County including county courts and social service departments before finally becoming a retail shopping center known locally as The Square Shopping Center which anchored I-35W Exit 10 near Altus Road between 2002-2007 before closing down again following heavy traffic congestion caused by development along Altus Road adjacent to Interstate 35W exit 10 that has since been redeveloped into mixed commercial/residential uses with several high rise buildings completed across Alta Street between I-35W exit 10 & I-40Aexit 11
