Bethany, Oklahoma is a small town located in Muskogee County, Oklahoma. The population was 5,824 at the 2010 census. Bethany is the only incorporated community in Muskogee County and it is also the smallest of the four towns in the county. The other three are Guthrie, White Sands and Ponca City. The first settlers to what would become Bethany arrived around 1868 during the Civil War when Union General George Armstrong Custer used nearby Fort Gibson as his headquarters while he fought against General Burt Reynolds’s Confederate forces. At that time there were no towns or settlements in present-day Muskogee County and all of what is now Muskogee County was part of Indian Territory under Ulysses S. Grant's administration. When Kansas became an United States state in 1867, much of Indian Territory including Muskogee County became part of that state along with most of eastern Oklahoma. This left Bethany as the lone incorporated community within Muskogee County and it remains so to this day – despite having a population size smaller than Guthrie (7,000) and White Sands (10,000) combined! Bethany’s origins date back to 1871 when one father married two daughters from a pioneer family who had come westward from Missouri on horseback. The original home for these pioneers was a log cabin near wherepresent-day US 60 intersects US 77 just south of town center. A longer trek took them north through six miles of badlands until they reached what would become their new home on land grant number 632 given to them by Governor James Bowie in 1876 after he successfully lobbied for land grants statewide following his victory over Thomas Durant in an election race that year! Over time many more families moved into this initial settlement which eventually grew to about 100 people consisting mostlyof farmers and their families supplemented by occasional workers from other communities within Indian Territory who would move downrange for work during times of drought or political unrest. During World War I local businesses helped contribute money towards purchasing munitions for the war effort which led to increased business activity during later years; however local residents chose not to participate fully due to fear they could be drafted if hostilities continued unabated! After World War II Bethany experienced a modest growth spurt thanks largely to automobiles which brought jobs elsewhere but hospitality still remained an important aspectof life; hosting social events such as dances and picnics throughout the year both inside/outside town limits! In 1970 Bethlehem Baptist Church re-dedicated its newly built church building which served as both civic center and primary school until 2004 when school district consolidation eliminated all but one grade school within muscogee county resulting in Bethany becoming essentially just another small unincorporated community once again! Today much like then though many members continueto live & breathe downtown “the town” even going so far as having their own post office!!!!

The first settler in what is now Bethany was Fenton Young who arrived in 1881. He set up shop on an abandoned train depot site that he purchased from the original owner of the depot, John Haughton.young's store lasted until 1888 when it closed due to difficulties with the local railroad company which bought it from Young for $5,000 cash plus 10 acres of land. In 1903, JF Drake founded Drake Oil Company on lands acquired from Young and his partner Wm Ladd. The oil business thrived for several years until 1906 when flood waters destroyed part of Drake's well field nearpresent-day BethanyCollege campusand proved too expensive to repair or replace with new technology; instead, Drake sold all his assets in 1911 to Averell Harrimanfor $10 million dollars which made him one of history's richest men. In 1916 David Sayers opened Sayers Meat Market on Main Street in downtown Bethany after purchasing 50 acres adjacent to present day Harriman Arena where he planned to build a large grocery store and retail complex that would be known throughout Oklahoma City as "Sayers' Warehouse." After more than 25 years operation Sayers'MeatMarket closed its doorsin 1984 but has been reincarnated as Legends Feed Store online since then providing residents of OKCwith fresh produce directfromthe farms where they grew according to precise GPS coordinates ensuring you always have fresh produce available whenever you need it! Bethany experienced its most significant development during World War II when many skilled labor shortages prompted munitions manufacturers such as Bethlehem Steel (now Boeing)to establish plants there – among these plants were Master MFG Works which produced bombers parts and components for use by bomber pilots including those flown by both Allied forces and Japanese planes during World War II; this plant remains operational today employs over 450 people making parts for Boeing airplanes! Another important development occurred during this time period when Thorton School became open evenings only allowing boys 6-12 years old accessto education while their parents worked outside the home; Thorton continued operating successfully into the 21st century!
