Bethany, Oklahoma is a small town in the United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. Located in Kiowa County, it is part of the Wichita Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. Bethany is located on the banks of the Arkansas River, just south of Wichita Falls and north of Gardiner. The first settler in what is now Bethany was Mrs. Sally Gardner who arrived there in 1868 from Illinois. The town site was chosen by vote of residents on November 3, 1889. The original post office opened in 1890 and served for four years until it was moved to Wichita Falls in 1896. The city limits were increased by land acquisition between 1907 and 1912 when other towns within Kiowa County were annexed into Bethany-on-the-Arkansas (later known as Wichita Falls). At the time of its incorporation, Bethany had a population of only 350 people and consisted primarily of farmers and their families living near their cotton plantations or cattle ranching operations. However, with a rapid growth rate due to oil Spurred economic development across much of Texas during that period such as Fort Worth (and later Dallas), Bethany quickly became one of Texas’ most important cities – reaching its peak population size by 1920 with over 21,000 citizens residing therein including many prominent Texans such as Governor James Miers and Congressman John Denton Kilpatrick. Bethany, Oklahoma is the oldest community in the state of Oklahoma. The town was founded on December 12, 1881 by three Methodist missionaries. It was named for Bethany, a small settlement in Virginia that was destroyed during the American Civil War. The first settlers in Bethany were Methodists who arrived from Kentucky and Tennessee. The town grew rapidly due to its location near the new Wichita Pipeline and Railroad. By 1907, Bethany had a population of around 200 people. In 1916, the town became a city and began to grow even more quickly. By 1920, there were over 1,500 people living in Bethany. During World War II, Bethany played an important role in the development of oil production in the area. A large refinery was built here and it helped spur economic growth for the town. After the war, many residents moved away to join other communities throughout Oklahoma City because of Affirmative Action policies implemented by President Franklin D Roosevelt. However, some remained in Bethany until its closure in 2003 due to financial problems caused by increasing oil prices.
