During World War I, Fort Bowie saw service as both a munitions depot and artillery position. It was during this time that Bethany become an important location for firearm training for American troops. In 1924, new firearms regulations were developed at Fort Bowie by then- Army Majordomo General John Jardine. These regulations banned open carry of firearms within 100 yards of military installations (including Ft Bowie), required registration of all handguns purchaser/seller/transferors (a process known as "gun registration"), and established maximum magazine capacity for handguns (10 rounds). After World War II ended, many American soldiers returned home with new rifles and shotguns they had acquired while serving abroad. The demand for these weapons caused several local gun dealers to reopen their stores in Bethany during the postwar period - some dating back to 1907! In 1948, state law finally allowed civilians to possess handguns outside of 100 yards of military installations! This relaxation of gun regulation led to increased handgun sales throughout central Oklahoma Territory - including Bethany!
