A post office was established at Bethany in 1907, and by 1912 it had grown to include a grocery store and two blacksmiths. In 1915, an electric power plant southeast of town became operational; this made possible local commerce as well as light industry such as foundry production that took place until the early 1960s when oil came to town and destroyed much of the industrial infrastructure In 1916-1917 (the same year that Tulsa became an independent city), one hundred men from Haskell County traveled toOklahoma City for work on a new munitions plant being built by Textron Motors Corporation A large number of people moved into Bethany during World War II due to its proximity to Tulsa's bombing raids As industries turned toward oil production throughout the 1970s-1980s, jobs also migrated away from BethANY; however, some businesses have continued operations since then including several restaurants which are adjacent to Walmart . In recent years there has been redevelopment taking place with projects such as major retail development anchored around Interstate 45 Today there are over 1,000 people living in Bethany + all sorts of businesses clustered around I-45
