Bethany, Oklahoma is a town in Osage County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,857 at the 2010 census. Bethany is part of the Tulsa Metropolitan Statistical Area. The history of Bethany begins with a group of settlers who came to the area in 1881. They named their new community after the biblical city of Bethlehem in Palestine. After a few years, many of these early settlers died from natural causes or were killed by Native Americans during the American Civil War. In 1904, more settlers arrived and founded an agricultural village called Bethany on U.S. Route 362 east of present-day Bethany. By 1910, only 10 people lived in Bethany and it had no school or water system. However, over time some residents built homes and businesses around the small town center while others tried to revive the village as a way to keep their families close together during difficult times. In 1922, when Oklahoma became an independent country, Bethanya's status changed: its post office became known as Jenks and its citizens adopted the name "Bethany." In 1930, local resident Roy Cobb began planting cotton near his home and soon realized that there was potential for growing this important crop in what was then little-known land between Jenks and McAlester (now Muskogee). Cobb marketed his cotton as "blessed boll cobs" because they were not harmed by insect infestation or other diseases common to other crops grown in that area at that time. By 1938 he had formed a partnership with James Wofford (a white man) and developed a marketing strategy for blessed Boll Cobs which included traveling throughout Tulsa County selling "blessed bolls" door-to-door by truck or horseback; advertising them through local newspapers;and holding field trials at various locations across Tulsa County until profits reached $10 per ton cash value! The success of blessed Boll Cobs convinced Cobb to establish his own Cotton Mill located within walking distance of his mill house on US Highway 526 about northeast of town center; production began July 1st 1939! At first hand-picked Boll Cobs were used for making floor coverings but later machine deliveries became available allowing us now to produce high quality items such as bedding covers T-Shirts Hats Hats Jackets Jackets Pants etc.. We credit our success today largely to Roy Cobb’s innovation & perseverance
Bethany, Oklahoma was founded by James and Esther Barnes in 1907. The town was originally named for Bethany Creek which ran through the area. The Barneses were the first settlers in the area and they began to build their home on a farm that they purchased from Mr. Anderson. In 1910, theBarnes family moved to what is now known as Bethany Township. The town was platted in 1911 and it became a local government entity under the jurisdiction of Haskell County. On July 1, 1913, Bethany Township passed a ordinance instituting daycare facilities for children between the ages of six months and twelve years old. On December 14, 1916, an act was signed by Governor John Fenton creating a school board with nine trustees who would manage all aspects of education within the township including primary and secondary schools; high school; vocational training academy; public library; fire department; post office; bank (the first bank in the township); cemetery (this was opened on November 1, 1918). In 1929, when Haskell County merged into Oklahoma Territory, Bethany Township became part of new Guthrie County which had its own school system. On January 1, 1931- two days after Guthrie County formed- Bethany Township passed an ordinance authorizing annexation by Guthrie County which happened on February 7th. When Oklahoma Territory lost its status as an independent state on January 16th 1939 following World War II, Bethany Township reverted back to its original name: Bethany Creek Township
