Bethany’s history goes back to 1861 when it was founded by settlers from Illinois. The town prospered for many years thanks to its manufacturing capabilities and its location near the state line. However, during World War II the town suffered heavy damage due to the bombing of Hiroshima. Despite this, Bethany continued to grow and prosper over the next few decades. In 1992, Bethany became an official city and began experiencing rapid growth. Today, Bethany is one of Oklahoma City’s most vibrant communities with a rich cultural heritage that includes Native American ancestry as well as European descent.

The city was founded in 1907 as a small settlement on the edge of present-day Bethany on the Arkansas River. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the railway and natural resources, and by 1915 it had become an established community with a population of 33. In 1925, Bethany became part of the newly constituted Oklahoma Territory, which later became the United States of America. After World War II, economic growth slowed in Bethany as other cities developed around it. The population reached its peak in 1960 when it was estimated that there were over 100 businesses in the city. However, by 2000 Bethany's economy had deteriorated and its population had shrunk to about 30 individuals. In recent years, however, measures have been taken to revive aspects of local culture including music and art festivals; restoration projects for downtown buildings; and support for educational programs within the city limits.
On November 3, 1907, Bethany was established as a town in Choctaw County, Oklahoma. The town was named for the biblical city of Bethlehem. The first post office in Bethany was established on December 5, 1907. On July 1, 1908, the town had an population of twelve people and it declined to six people by 1911. By 1915, Bethany had only five residents. In 1916 the government abandoned the town and it reverted to its pre-government status with a population of two people.
