Bethany, Oklahoma is a small town in the US state of Oklahoma. The population was 914 at the 2010 census. Bethany is located in southeastern Haskell County on the eastern edge of the Tulsa metropolitan area and about 20 miles (32 km) south of downtown Tulsa. The town was founded by settlers in 1909, when they moved from Oregon to what is now Bethany. By 1918, it had a post office and two storehouses. In 1924, a saw mill were constructed and operated until it closed in 1927. A truck stop was also built there in that decade. After World War II, development increased as farmers began to move into the area and settle near lakes such as Mayflower or Philbrook Springs for water supplies and pastureland for cattle drives. In 1957, Bethany's first high school graduate class graduated from Stroudsburg High School, which had been established in 1907 as an all-girls school for white students only. That year, Bethany became a full city within Tulsa proper when Tulsans voted to annex frame areas east of South Grand Boulevard including parts of Bethany west of Highway 169/Ursula Drive (now I-40). That annexation made Bethany one of four cities that formed the Tulsa Metropolitan Area government block; other cities were Guthrie, Altus, and Jenks. The city limits then expanded outward along Urda Avenue to include much of present-day Jenks before resuming their original boundaries near Interstate 40/Hwy 169/Ursula Drive just before they merged with Tulsa proper again atmileage point on Urda Avenue subsequent to its incorporation into City Limits Park effective January 1st 2009 Today's community sprang up around three churches: First Baptist Church (founded 1886), Methodist Episcopal Church (1892), and United Bible Societies Chapel (founded 1954). There are also several businesses including hardware stores(1924-27 Sawmill & Mfg Co.), restaurant(1985-present BJ’s Grill), convenience store(1990s-2001 Dollar General), post office(1909), gas station(2005+ Hess Energy Partners LP), agricultural Implement Store Inc., ranch house built 1875 by C T Wells Downtown has become home to a variety of businesses including restaurants such as JJ’s BBQ & Wingsetters Barbecue LLC., Dunkin Donuts (), Subway (), Taco Bell (), Pizza Hut (). As well as retail locations like Sears ()and JCPenney (). One notable example is the new InterContinental Hotel located adjacent to Interstate 44 across from Walmart(). It opened late 2006 with major renovation that included an addition designed by starchitect Bruce envisions both hotel functions such as conference rooms with private balconies overlooking Interstate 44 while also accommodating 300 suites for overflow guests during events like basketball games or Oklahoman Arts Festival
