Bethany is a small town in the Osage Hills area of Oklahoma, United States. The Bethany community was founded in 1907 by settlers from Missouri and Illinois. It became a city in 1907 and was named for its founder, Bethany Hinson. The population of Bethany was 1069 at the 2010 census. The first settler to arrive in what is now Bethany were two families from Missouri who crossed the Arkansas River into Oklahoma on November 15, 1907. They named their new community after their daughter, Bethany Hinson (1863-1937), who had recently moved to that state from Kansas City, Missouri. There were six other families living in the town when it became a city on February 5, 1909. In 1911, Mayor Fergus O'Malley dedicated a new public park called "Olympic Park" which served as the town's central square until 1922 when it was replaced by the current municipal building which still stands today. After three years of construction, Mayor George Wetherington dedicated the new building on October 24, 1915 during an event commemorating Oklahoma's centennial year. At that time there were only 350 residents living in Bethany but it soon grew rapidly with newcomers coming from all over eastern Oklahoma and Arkansas to find land for farming and ranching opportunities near Liberal Springs Dam along the Canadian River where water power could be used to generate electricity for local homes and businesses or for powering mills or factories located upstream at Athelney Mills Dam on Beaver Creek. On July 1st 1916 prohibitionist candidate James Moulton ran against incumbent Mayor George Wetherington and won handily with almost 60% of the vote; this marked Tulsa’s first prohibition victory since 1885! In 1920 Mayor Wetherington retired due to ill health but he remained honorary mayor until his death in 1923–24;during his tenure much progress was made including improvements to civic facilities such as improved roads and more efficient sewers which helped drive down property values throughout Tulsa! In 1928Mayor Atherton appointed four members of his cabinet: Attorney General John Sayers (later state senator), State Auditor Harry Baird (future governor), Treasury Secretary Burt Seligman (later famous prosecutor) – all highly important positions within Tulsa government at that time! After World War II ended hostilities ceased between Tulsa & Russia so business began flowing back into town again however housing prices continuedto rise making life difficult for many people especially those without money or connections! On Valentine's Day 1945 President Franklin D Roosevelt delivering remarks about postwar reconstruction brought about celebration among many citizens of Bethany as they prepared for their upcoming Christmas season! That same day bombs exploded insidetheOKlahomaCity hotel killing forty-eight people including nineteen children before being stopped by police just five minutes after detonation! With post-war prosperity beginning to slowly snake its way back into town things started going bad again with high crime rates coupled with increasing expenses associated with running an open society while resources dwindled!. In 1951 Tulsa County voted not to annex part of nearby Choctaw County so ******* attempted annexation******* resulting in several lawsuits************* finally successful thru early 1957 when********** newly elected county commission recommended annexation********* meeting took place where ******* approved******* becoming one continuous Oklahoman county *****
