In 1951, Bethany voters passed a resolution to change their name to "Bethany" after local resident and life member of the Bethaney County Historical Society Mrs. Ida Ladd McIntosh (1881-1968). On September 25th, 2008, Governor George W. Bush issued an executive order changing the name to "Bethany" in commemoration of Mrs McIntosh's long career as an advocate for history and culture in eastern Oklahoma
