Bethany, Oklahoma is a town located in Comanche County, Oklahoma. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. Bethany is part of the Tulsa metropolitan area. It is one of the few towns in Comanche County that has not been destroyed by the Civil War. The first settlers to this area were farmers who arrived around 1867. One of the first businesses in Bethany was a post office which started operation on May 6, 1872. As time went on, more and more businesses opened up in Bethany including a Methodist church (1876), a bank (1881), and an insurance company (1906). In 1907, it became a city and various improvements were made such as enlarging the city limits and adding streets and sidewalks. During World War I, many residents served in the military including Mayor John Halsey who enlisted as an infantryman with Company B 1/9th Infantry Regiment from Bethany. He later served as mayor from 1920-1925 . During World War II many residents served in the military including Captain Curtis Crouch who commanded Company A 114th Infantry Regiment during World War II from 1942-1945 . After World War II ended there was much development within the town with builders starting up businesses like The First National Bank (1948), Armour Equipment Corporation(1950) and Purdy’s Hardware (1959). In 1970-1971, much progress was made when plans were announced for Interstate 44 to be built through Comanche County which would have had significant impacts on both Bethany and Tulsa but no action occurred until 1996 when construction began on I-44 across town which would eventually destroy most of downtown Bethany while leaving side streets undisturbed. Today, aspects of downtown Bethany remain untouched such as its brick buildings dating back to 1889 which are still used today asArena Theatre or Ladd Arena for basketball games or used for other purposes such as storage or remodeling by professional athletes throughout the year such as LeBron James during his Akron Cavaliers visit in 2017 . Additionally some remaining historical buildings like Post Office Annexe still serve local needs like generating power for residents or providing storage for items like furniture before being sold off to individual owners over time since 2009 according to Historical markers website
