Bethany is a town in Payne County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 3,712 at the 2010 census. The Bethany Mall is the largest mall in the county and it anchors the center of the town. The first settler in what is now Bethany was John Fenton who came to the area in 1881. He named his land "Fenton's Fork". A post office was established in Bethany on January 1, 1883, and remained in operation until it was discontinued on October 15, 1907. In 1908, James Hensley built a small cabin near where he lived for many years after coming to Bethany from Muskogee County, Oklahoma. In 1916 Gertrude McKnight bought some land east of present day Bethany from Wm Laughlin for $1 per acre. Mrs. McKnight renamed her land "Bethany" after her mother's birthplace of Belfast, Northern Ireland. She laid out an unpaved road that led to her home which she called "The Glen". Her husband operated a general store and farm there until his death in 1934. There were several school districts that served Bethany before consolidation took place in 1941 when Payne County had 24 schools with one superintendent responsible for each district: seven schools were within Uniontown Schools District #2 while ten schools were within McCurtain School District #2; six schools were within Shawnee Indian School District #3; four schools were within Ironton School District #4 In 1951-1952 three new school districts (Uniontown/McCurtain/Ironton) merged into Payne County anti- Consolidation campaign slogan " unification makes sense ". On July 6th of that year by order of Governor Claude Robertson all school boards had to merge or be dissolved effective September 1st as per Order No . 9052 “ To Consolidate For Good” This order created fourteen new school districts across Payne County including five newly formed from unincorporated areas including part of Shawnee Indian School District #3 which became Pawnee Nation High School under administration of First Class Judge Denny Hardin Jr., President pro tem Baylor University Studies Institute – Tulsa Branch Office for American Indian Affairs Classes opened at Pawnee Nation High School on November 3rd 1954 followed by classes open at Third Class Judge Hardin’s old jail located east side alley between Second & Third Streets NW also known as “Homesick Hall” It should be noted that this building still stands today just off I-40 exit 171 south near Guthrie Airport According to Village website: "According to Village website," 'the village began as a group of farmers living around an old manor house which they used as their makeshift courthouse.'" There are no records extant showing when this courthouse actually opened however according to web site information it did so sometime before early 1953 when Uniontown SchoolsDistrict 2 merger took place."
