Ammunition history in Bethany, Oklahoma began with the arrival of the U.S. Cavalry on Indian reservations in 1907. The regiment was stationed at Fort Sill, Oklahoma and soon began its experiments with new artillery ammunition. In 1911, the regiment returned to Fort Sill and continued its research into new artillery ammunition. One of the products of this research was a .50-caliber rifle bullet called the "Tiger" projectile. This projectile had a lead core that was surrounded by an alloy casing made of copper, brass, and tin. The Tiger projectile quickly became popular for use with rifles in World War I because it allowed for high damage potential without sacrificing range or accuracy. Thanks to its limited number of projectiles per round, however, the Tiger projectiles were not well suited for use in anti-tank guns or light machineguns during World War I. During World War II, American Rifleman magazine published an article entitled "How We Did It: Our History With Ammunition". This article chronicled American Rifleman's experience using artillery ammunition from World War I to 1945. In addition to discussing how American Rifleman's expertise led them to be pioneers in developing specific types of munitions such as armor piercing rounds and incendiary rounds, this article also included photos and illustrations describing various types of artillery ammunition used during World War II.
