The community was founded by John Bartles in 1906 as a farming and ranching village on the east side of the Arkansas River near present-day Muskogee. By 1910, it had developed into a small town with a population of 110. In 1915, Bartlesville became the capital of Oklahoma Territory after Oklahoma statehood. The post office was established at Bartlesville on April 1, 1916. In 1930, when Tulsa seceded from Oklahoma Territory, Bartlesville remained within Tulsa County until it joined with Payne County to form Graham County in 1933. The growth of Tulsa led to an increase in demand for services and jobs in Bartlesville; by 1940, its population had reached 617 residents. However, World War II led to an increased demand for military production across the region (a trend that continued through the Korean and Vietnam Wars), which caused local mills to close their doors during those years; by 1945, there were only 73 inhabitants left in Bartlesville after more than 20 businesses closed due to wartime prohibitionism. Bartlesville is a city in the U.S. state of Oklahoma, founded in 1907 by entrepreneur John W. Bartles and his wife, Emma. The population was 97,548 at the 2010 census, making it the seventh-largest city in Oklahoma. It is part of the Tulsa metropolitan area. The city was named for Colonel James H. Bartles (1854-1927), an officer in the Union Army who fought in the Indian Wars and later served as territorial governor ofOklahoma Territory from 1907 to 1911 before becoming its first mayor. Bartles and became a reality on November 3, 1907 when he purchased 2,000 acres (8 km2) east of what is now downtown Tulsa from Reuben Denny for $4 per acre ($30 million today).
