Bartlesville was founded in 1907 by Bartlett C. Rhodes, a rancher and banker. The town grew rapidly due to its location near the new oilfields of Oklahoma City and its proximity to the Wichita Mountains. In 1935, Bartlesville became a city; it had a population of approximately 100,000 at the time. The arrival of Interstate 40 made Bartlesville an important regional center for economic development and transportation. Today, Bartlesville is a small city with a population of around 30,000 people who are concentrated within the downtown area. The early years of Bartlesville were difficult for the community because it was located in what was then one of the most hostile regions in West Texas. Despite this challenge, Rhodes led his citizens into business during their earliest years while they fought off Native American attacks that disrupted access to resources necessary for development. By 1915, Rhodes had built several branch libraries in the community as well as erected churches and schools. During World War I, Bartlesville Joined the United StatesArmy as part of General Douglas MacArthur's "New West" campaign which aimed to unify Oklahoma andwestern Colorado through military action; however, following MacArthur's death in 1918, much of New West fell apart andbartlesvilles residents lost their opportunity to participate in this cultural cross-roads event. Rhodes died from complications from pneumonia on October 25th 1902 at age 66 years old while living on his ranch west of Tulsa; he was buried at Springdale Cemetery near Tulsa when his death certificate did not list him as such due to his age at that time After his death there emerged heated controversy over who should succeed him atop Tulsa's influential banking family - John Wirtz or Barthlett C Rhodes Jr.? Ultimately Wirtz assumed control but despite some protestations from other members of both families prominent citizens chose John Wirtz over Barthlett C Rhodes Jr., Sr..
