The name of the town comes from an old Cherokee word meaning "happy place." The community was named after General John A. Bartlett, who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as Governor of Oklahoma Territory and as U.S. Minister to Mexico City. When he died in 1885, his son James P. Bartlett took over the role of namesake for the town until 1925 when it became part of Kiowa County. The first post office opened in 1907 and operated until 1912; it was renamed on November 16 that year as Bartlesville Center with J.P.'s help slogans such as "Journey North" and "Oklahoma's Progress." In 1916, a two-story school building (now Post Office Annex) was built on Main Street within the limits of what is now Bartlesville; it served as the primary school from 1907 to 1915 before becoming a Methodist church in 1924 which still uses its original facade today (with some alterations).
