The history of Bartlesville, Oklahoma begins with the arrival of white settlers in 1871. The town was named for Major General John A. Bartlett, who led units in the Mexican-American War and fought in the American Civil War. The first store in town was built on West Second Street by a group of settlers known as the "Owenites." In 1875, Bartlesville became an official city, and its first mayor was J.D. Owen.

The area that Bartlesville now occupies was first settled by Native Americans in the 18th century. A post office called Bartlesville was established in 1836, and remained in operation until 1907. In 1907, the town became a city under the name of Tulsa. The population of Tulsa City grew to over 100,000 by 1951; however, as oil production increased throughout Oklahoma during this time period, Tulsa City's population decreased significantly over the next few decades until it reached its current level of around 40,000 in 2010. The history of Bartlesville begins with one man - John Purdy - who built his first home in what is now Bartlesville on October 3rd, 1887. At that time there were only a few settlements within present-day Tulsa County and very little industry had developed within the region due to lack of access to natural resources such as water or land. However, when John Purdy built his home and began trading goods from his farmstead for goods brought downriver by steamboats known as "the Arkansas" he quickly realized that he had found something special about this location: it could support large numbers of people without becoming overwhelmed by demand from surrounding towns and villages which were developing at an alarming rate due to railroad development across the state line into Indian Territory (now Oklahoma). John Purdy's decision to establish a town near where he would soon be making money led to rapid growth within what would eventually become Bartlesville – not only because individuals wanted to live close enough to make profits but also because local merchants saw an opportunity for their businesses to grow if they did not cede market share to more rapidly growing rivals such as those located east of Wichita Falls (then part of Texas). By 1890 there were already over 50 businesses operating in what is now Bartlesville – many which still operate today including several banks (one still survives), grocery stores/markets/, cotton ginners/spinning mills/, livery stable(s)/feeder stations/, doctor's offices/, law firms/(etc.), auto repair shops/, etc.. What followed was years of steady growth for both John Purdy's business enterprise and for Bartholomewvilte citizens themselves – who started buying property along Loop Road Northeast starting around 1910 primarily due simplyto find a place where they could raise their families without having them move every two years or so like many other farmers had done before them. Over time new neighborhoods were created just south of Loop Road such as Riverside Gardens (), Sunset Heights (), Glencoe Manor (), McCullough Manor (), etc.. These developments are still visible today despite being completely obliterated by construction projects undertaken during various eras throughout recent history: most notably Interstate 45 cut through much of downtown Tulsa between 1950-1960 which largely destroyed any evidence whatsoeverof these earlier neighborhoods while concurrently creating some truly gargantuan housing complexes consisting mostly entirely of pre-fabricated modular buildings paid for largely through federal stimulus dollars allocated specifically towards roadway rehabilitation projects! Bartlesville is a city in the U.S. state of Oklahoma, located on the Arkansas River in Tulsa County. The population was 27,898 at the 2010 census. It is one of two cities in Tulsa County and its county seat, Owsleyville. The first known settlement in Bartlesville was on the grounds of what is now Midtown Tulsa at the mouth of Beaver Creek about 1837. There were several small villages before it became a town on November 2, 1881 when land east of US-59 and north of present day US- 169 were donated to establish it as an independent city by act of Congress under the name "Owsleyville". In 1907, Bartlesville annexed part of Tulsa's westside which made it one municipality with a total population exceeding 100,000 people for the first time in Oklahoma history. On December 20th, 1907 General George Custer died near Fort Smith during his military campaign against Native Americans and was buried at Mount Pleasant Cemetery within Bartlesville limits where he had been living since 1877 as Colonel Dodge's Quartermaster General's son-in-law John Widenour reported that Custer had requested burial there because he considered himself "a Colorado man" rather than Native American and would not have allowed any Indian graves to remain unburied if he remained Living apart from his white family members after being exchanged from Plains Creeks side into Army service with Indians near Buffalo Bill’s (Hagen) Ranch later that year).
