Bartlesville, Oklahoma is a small city located in the eastern portion of the state of Oklahoma. The population was 5,814 at the 2010 census. The city is named for General George Armstrong Bartlett and it is one of five towns in Bartlesville County. The first settlers to what is now Bartlesville were pioneers who left Texas in 1836. They arrived on horseback and walked through the Kansas Territory before moving on to Indian Territory. In 1839 they founded a log cabin called Black Hills Station which stood on a piece of land that later became part of Bartlesville. The post office was established in 1841 and was named for General George Armstrong Bartlett who fought with distinction during the Mexican-American War. After his death in 1846, his wife, Julia, continued to serve as postmaster until her death in 1865. During World War II, Bartlesville played an important role as both a military airbase and manufacturing center for aircraft production by Boeing and other manufacturers. After the war ended, many businesses closed down or moved out of town as technology advanced and new industry became available elsewhere. In 1969, Barton Elementary School was built adjacent to Interstate 44 and it has been served by that highway ever since. The school District #2 erected a new elementary school building which opened in 2006 adjacent to Barton High School

The population was 97,643 at the 2000 census, making it the third-most populous city in Tulsa County after Tulsa and Muskogee. It is also one of the fastest-growing cities inOklahoma. The first permanent settler in Bartlesville was Wm Mosely, who arrived around 1881. He built a log cabin on the east side of town on what is now Fourth Street. A post office called Bartlesville was established in 1886, and remained in operation until 1907. The city began to grow rapidly due to its location on a Nursery Creek flood plain that provided water for irrigation crops and cattle ranches. By 1912, Bartlesville had a flour mill, groceries, a movie theater,and two hotels – both designed by architect George Biddle Petersen. The population reached 200 by 1916; however, World War I halted development and growth untilafter World War II when oil production resumed following World War II military occupation of Iraq
In 1865, Bartlesville was founded by Andrew G. Johnson and James M. Bartles. The town was named for General John C. Bartlett, who had commanded the Union forces in the Battle of Perryville. In 1868, Mayor A.J. Fenton erected a courthouse and jail in downtown Bartlesville on Commerce Street; the first post office was opened in 1870. By 1881, the population of Bartlesville had reached 1,500 residents. In 1889, construction began on the Oklahoma State Capitol building on what is now Oklahoma Ave., just east of downtown; the building opened in 1893 and served as statehouse until 1907 when it was replaced by the current structure on Constitution Ave..
