Bartlesville is located on the eastern edge of the Tulsa metropolitan area and is within the Tulsa–Milton, OK Combined Statistical Area. The town was named after General John J. Bartlett who fought in World War II as a Patton unit leader and then as an Air Force general in Korea. The first post office in Bartlesville was established on December 11, 1881, by Lorenzo Hinton. The name "Bartlesville" was anglicized to "Bourke" in 1903 when it became part of Tulsa County with that community. A branch courthouse was built at this location in 1907 and later moved to its present location near Western Avenue and Sheridan Road (now Barker Road). In 1911, cash crops were introduced to Bartlesville by Wagon Wheel Cattleman J L Spears and his son-in-law W P Chamberlain which led to a gold rush that started in 1912 when several prospectors discovered gold nuggets on government land just north of town near mile marker 20 on Ute Creek Rd.. By 1916 there were over 100 businesses operating out of town with 1,000 residents employed directly or indirectly from industry; such as smelters, sawmills, copper mines and other mining operations Oklahoma State University began operation here on October 15th 1906 as Central State Normal School before becoming OSU campus during 1924–1927 under President James Woodward In 1931 Dr Birtis organized what would become Oral Roberts University which had its campus here from 1923 until 1914 On March 6th 1945 during WWII Japanese forces bombed US Naval Station Moore Island killing 300 people including Commandant Commander Rear Admiral Fujimura Asahi who planned military campaigns against American naval forces off Okinawa In commemoration of those killed USS 'Moore' DD 536 rests at anchor outside downtown Bartlesville awaiting donation for restoration
