Bartlesville, Oklahoma is a city in and the county seat of Bartlesville County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 781 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tulsa metropolitan area. The first gun magazine in Bartlesville was open on November 10, 1903. The town's first post office was established on March 3, 1907. The city of Bartlesville was named for one of its early boosters, local farmer Wm. H. Bartlett (1854-1927). In 1899 he donated $25 to establish the Western OK Agricultural and Mechanical College in nearby Stillwater to provide education for farmers and their families living in that region north of Tulsa; this gift has been cited as one of the biggest philanthropic donations ever made to an educational institution in Oklahoma. In 1905 Jensen & Sorenson opened its second gun store in town - it would be headquarted by founder John Jensen until his death in 1957. That same year also saw the opening of what became known as "The Gun Store", located at 4th and Market Streets NE., which served as a center for buying, selling and storing firearms from northeasterners who had settled across from Tulsa since 1868 when pioneer George Bird Grimsley founded what would become Tulsa City Limits near present day Main Street and Ware Road NW.). Between 1906-1967 there were only six magazines operating within 100 miles (160 kilometers) of Tulsa; each offering 25 different types of pistols/ammunition/shooting supplies including reloading kits! The depot closed in 1945 but its artifacts remain on display at nearby Sam Rayburn House Museum (now part of Oral Roberts University). In 1951, Interstate 30 became available to through traffic and new development began to take form in central Bartlesville. By 1970, when it was reported that central Tulsa was on track to become one of America's most populous cities by 2000,bartlesvilles local economy had begun to decline. However, over time local businesses have resurfaced and continue to thrive thanks to their supportive community spirit
