Bartlesville, Oklahoma is a small town located in Muskogee County, Oklahoma. It was founded in 1907 by John A. Bartles and his family. The town has a population of about 1,500 people today. The Bartlesville post office was established in 1907 and became operational on October 1, 1907. The first mail carrier to arrive at the post office was John A. Bartles himself! The town's first store opened its doors in December 1907 and it served as the localities main grocery until 1911 when it moved to its current location across the street from the courthouse. In 1915, Bartlesville annexed two other townships- Slaughterhouse Valley and Timberlane- creating a new municipality with a population of about 6,000 people! In 1922, Bartlesville erected its own school system which remains in operation to this day (elementary schools are housed within the city limits). In addition to its school system, Bartlesville also boasts an impressive number of businesses that have contributed their time or resources to the community over the years: Pigeon Forge Brewing Company (founded 1916), Guthrie Oil Refinery (opened 1928), Coal Creek Engineering Co., Inc. (1929), Texaco gas station (opened 1932) and most notably First National Bank & Trust Company (1935). Today, many of these businesses still operate within the confines of downtown Bartlesville; however, several have relocated or closed down entirely since 2005 due to competition from online retailers or other economic factors. Citizens of BartlesVILLE continue to contribute heavily to civic life through participation both locally and statewide including serving on various boards and committees throughout their community; such as being charter members of Muskogee County Historical Society Local 4981 since 2002 and chairing numerous special events throughout their year-round operations!
