Bartlesville, Oklahoma is a city in Tulsa County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 107 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tulsa Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was named for Colonel John Bartlett, who had a settler's cabin built there in 1892. The town began as a stagecoach stop on the route from Tulsa to Jenks and other nearby towns. In 1907, the first post office opened in Bartlesville. At that time, it consisted of just 12 citizens. By 1920, when oil reserves were discovered there, the population had grown to 150 people and the post office became an important transportation hub for settlers moving into the area. In 1929, construction began on what would become Bartlesville's first school building; it opened in 1930 and served as the town's primary educational institution until its closure in 1972. The oil industry played a significant role in Bartlesville's growth over ensuing decades; during World War II, local businesses produced munitions and airplane parts for military production plants across the nation. However, when demand decreased after the war ended and gas prices increased, many small businesses closed their doors throughout most of 1990s; however, some have since reopened and continue to serve as vital economic engines for Bartlesville today. In recent years there has been an increase in development around downtown; including several high-end nightclubs and restaurants as well as new apartment complexes and retail stores – all helping to spur job growth within its walls while also bolstering overall infrastructure needs such as street repairs and watermain replacement projects due to severe drought conditions that have struck much of Oklahoma lately.
