In 1881, oil companies discovered oil near present-day Bartlesville; however no well was drilled until 1907 when J.C. Hargrave drilled two wells which resulted in production being started at Pryor Oil & Gas Co., Ltd.. Eager to capitalize on this new discovery, local residents voted in 1911 to form their own town named after George S. Bartleson (the founder). The first post office opened in 1912 with W C Hargrave as mail carrier As demand for oil grew ever greater and more rigs were erected near Pryor County seat Arkadelphia for extracting shale gas located about 25 miles east of Pryor City limits some citizens decided they should too have their say about whether or not Pryor County seat should remain within Arkadelphia Limits or if the entire county should be annexed into Tulsa After much discussion over several months an agreement was reached that charter schools established within Bartlesville Limits would continue operate while annexation proceedings were still pending but all other properties within limits including Pryor Citylimits would become part of Tulsa

In 1915, it became one of two towns in Stephens County to be incorporated as a city; the other being Guthrie. The city name was changed back to Bartlesville in 1923 after it lost its charter status as a municipality due to lack of voter support from residents. The first post office opened in Bartlesville on April 15, 1907; it closed on December 8, 1914 because of equipment failure within the local Post Office building. The oil industry played an important role in Bartlesville's history and economy until the late 1920s when production began to drop due to technological advances and competition from other industries such as farming and transportation
The first permanent settler in Bartlesville was John C. Bartles, who arrived in 1868. The town was named for him. The post office was established in 1876, and the first store, the "Bartlesville Drug Store," opened in 1877. In 1907, the first oil well was drilled in Bartlesville.
