Bartlesville is a town in Ife County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Ife and the county seat of Ife County. The name "Bartlesville" is derived from John Bartlett, a settler in 1881. The first post office was established in 1903. The community was named after Big Bucket Creek which flows through it. In 1907, the first school opened in Bartlesville and was called Jefferson School because it had been donated by Judge John A Jefferson of Wichita Falls, Texas. It temporary served students until 1909 when construction began on what would become Our Lady of Loretto Catholic School which became operational on May 1, 1909. In 1924, residents voted to change the name to Bartlesville after General George Armstrong Custer who fought with Mexico during the Mexican-American War and later died at Battle of Little Bighorn near here while leading his cavalry squadron against Cheyenne Sioux warriors under Sitting Bull. The general's family donated land for the new community and a public square/park was named for him and current Mayor Donnie Witherspoon also contributed to its development. The population reached 10,000 by 1930 but grew slowly thereafter due to several factors including World War II shortages of labor and other economic hardships throughout southeastern Oklahoma City area; competition from neighboring towns such as Tulsa (which had recently annexed Ife), growth within Iffe County due to military veteran migration (particularly since World War II); and an increasing number of people commuting into Tulsa or Oklahoma City for work Reasons such as better schools there or easier access to Interstate 40 highway which made life more convenient outside of town limits

The name is derived from Bartholomew Hardeman, who settled the area in 1881. Bartlesville was founded on May 6, 1885 by W.J. Hadden and J.M. White with $1,000 each as a loan to local farmers for land purchases amounting to 149 acres (60 hectares). The town first grew out of a swap between two men - Wm Sertorius and James Auld - for goods they needed for their farmsteads in nearby Sulphur Springs and Choctaw Bluff. In 1886, Hadden built the first store in Bartlesville and within 2 years had organized a post office and built 3 homes - one of which still stands today. The settlement quickly prospered because it was located on the main stagecoach route between Tulsa and Wichita Falls; trade brought people here from all over Kansas City Territory to sell crops or buy goods that were moving eastward along this route during the early 1880s boomtime period when railroads arrived in western Oklahoma Territory after being emigrated from Illinois/Indiana/Canada via Texas & New Mexico & Mexican Railway
Bartlesville was founded in 1907 by J.D. Bartles and named for his brother, James D. Bartles. The town flourished during the early years of the 20th century as a center for oil production and commerce. However, World War I caused a decline in industry and town population. In the 1930s, the town underwent a dramatic transformation when it became home to Oklahoma's first large-scale aluminum smelter. The smelter produced over 1 million metric tons of aluminum each year until its closure in 1980. The metal manufacturing industries have since all departed Bartlesville, but many of its buildings still stand today including the Barton High School and Barton Elementary Schools.
