It is the seat of Muskogee County government and it is part of the Tulsa metropolitan area. Ardmore was founded in 1881 by Major General James A. Walker and his family. The first post office in Ardmore was established on July 5, 1881, under the name of Osborne. The present post office building was built in 1904 and replaced an older structure that had been destroyed by a fire two years earlier. The name for Ardmore at this time may have been taken from nearby Osage Hills which also included the towns of Bixby and McCurtain (now Fort Worth). In 1907, ArdMORE incorporated as a city with a population of 10 people. On January 15, 1909, ArdMORE passed an ordinance granting suffrage to women which made it one of the few cities in Oklahoma to do so at that time. In 1916, Mayor Oscar Patey opened the first grocery store in what would become Ardmore when he purchased land north of downtown from J C Boyd & Sons Hardware Store Limited Partnership.. The 1917 tornado struck town leaving severe damage including downed trees and power outages lasting several days; however no fatalities were reported
