Ardmore is a city in Muskogee County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 16,521 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Muskogee County and the largest municipality in Muskogee County by area. Ardmore was founded in 1881 as a town on the banks of Buffalo Creek. The post office name for Ardmore from 1881 to 1907 was "Buffalo". In 1907, the town became a city under the name "Ardmore". The original downtown block still stands and is home to most of Ardmore's commercial district. The first post office building in Ardmore was built in 1881 by J.D. Garland and his wife; it served as their home until they moved out in 1906. At that time, mail service through Tulsa arrived via Stagecoach Road which crossed Buffalo Creek just south of where present-day Randolph Rd crosses it today (the creek has been diverted). In 1907, when cityhood was granted to ArdMORE by state government, eastern part of town merged with nearby Stillwater while western section became an independent incorporated village called Wellington (named after Captain John Wellington who served as US Army Inspector General during Indian Wars). This annexation led to what is now known as "The Divide" between Wellington and ArdMORE because much of what is east of Randolph Rd., north of Western Ave., and west of Main St./Welch Blvd./US Hwy 66 were annexed into Wellington while much land east/north/west of Randolph Rd., south-southeast corner of Main St./Welch Blvd./US Hwy 66 were annexed into ArdMORE (this would eventually include much areas now within Muskogee County including parts formerly within Stillwater). In 1911, after years efforts by City Councilman Wm Sibley to get businesses situated on Main Street outside what are now municipal limits due largely to lack thereof available lots elsewhere within Municipality boundaries without contributing anything – despite not having any services offered thereto – City Council voted 4-1 to erect a meeting hall on Meeting Square opposite Post Office with plans for more business located thereon once services started being provided therein. Businesses quickly followed suit locating thereabouts beginning what would become one continuous radial growth pattern across all municipalities throughout OKLAHOMA until 2014 when main arterial street designation changed from Main Street NW - Intersection withOKC Boulevard renamining Downtown Streets
