Ardmore, Oklahoma is home to the Red Dot Sight History Museum. The museum is a combination of history and technology. It features exhibits on how red dot sights have been used in Ardmore since the early 1900s. There are also displays on firearms and ammunition from that time period. Ardmore is a city in Muskogee County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 24,569 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Muskogee County. Ardmore is on the Arkansas River and on the border of both Muskogee County and Creek County. The first Europeans to visit what is now Ardmore were French missionaries in 1819. After years of exploration by parties led by Captain John Stroud in 1829, they named their new settlement after General James Fayette Butler who had been killed in action during the Mexican–American War two years earlier. Frémont's party crossed into Indian Territory on November 5, 1829 near present-day Waco, Texas and explored that area as far east as present-day Tulsa before returning to Fort Gibson on January 1st 1830. In 1835, Jethro Gibbs founded a post office at Ardmore with mail service from Fort Gibson to Wichita Falls (now Wichita). In 1840 lumber merchants Elijah Hicks and George Aiken organized the townsite around their sawmill called "Blacksburg" which became Ardmore about 1850 when local residents decided to name it for General Butler's hometown in France. By 1860 there were over 25 businesses operating within one mile of town limits and 100 people living there including 60% African American slaves working at local plantations while most other residents were white Presbyterians or Methodists who supported slavery but did not live close enough to work any fields themselves to be counted as slaveholders. During the American Civil War (1861–1865), many citizens served in Union armies such as Company H Nineteenth Kansas Infantry under Colonel Charles Goodnight while others worked farms or construction jobs supporting military objectives around town until April 1865 when Confederate forces surrendered at Appomattox Court House following a three-week siege resulting in more than 700 deaths including General Butler himself who was captured along with his entire staff before being paroled into Union custody just prior to his execution that same year. From 1865 until 1861 Oklahoman blacks had been used as sharecroppers by white farmers; however beginning in 1861 African Americans began attending public schools through a program sponsored by Governor Mira Landon which gave freedmen access to education opportunities denied them hitherto by law including land ownership and voting rights although some homes still remained unoccupied due dramatically low levels of productivity among these groups due primarily to lack of resources common among all ruralOklahoma communities during this time period Despite limited educational opportunities for black Oklahomans during this period much progress has been made since then culminating with passage of The Civil Rights Act Of 1964 which extended civil rights protection statewide among all races

Ardmore is a small town in the eastern Oklahoman. It was founded by settlers in 1857 and has since been one of the most important towns in that region. The first post office was established in Ardmore in 1859, and the first store was built in 1865. The town grew rapidly during the decades following its founding, and by 1907 it had over 10,000 residents. Ardmore became an important center for cotton production during the early 20th century, and its economy prospered until the late 1920s when World War I caused a decline in farming activity throughout Oklahoma. After World War II, Ardmore experienced rapid growth as a result of new industrial development. Today, Ardmore remains a vibrant community with strong cultural values and traditions.
The town of Ardmore, Oklahoma was founded in 1907 by the merger of two small towns, Atoka and Haskell. The community grew rapidly due to its location on a major irrigation canal and its access to the Indian Territory. In 1912, Ardmore became the capital of Oklahoma.
