Ardmore is a city in Muskogee County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 9,824 at the 2010 census. Ardmore is the county seat of Muskogee County and home to the Ardmore Museum of Art. The first human beings to settle in what is now Muskogee County were included within the Shawnee tribe and lived near present-day Tulsa. Their leader, Cornetto, negotiated their removal to Indian Territory in 1821 as part of a treaty between the United States and the Shawnee nation that ended Indian Wars. In 1836, James Fenton established a ranch at what is now Ardmore. A post office was established there in 1841 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1892, John Waddell founded an oil well at Ardmore about 15 miles (24 km) north of Tulsa on Osage River flats which he named Waddell Oil Field after himself and his father-in-law J.W. Dickey (1837–1920). It wasn't until 1907 that Ardmore's first school opened; however, it closed due to lack of students when oil production dropped off during World War I. However, by 1921 both new schools had reopened and continued serving the community until they were replaced by public schools system developed throughout Oklahoma during 1940s/1950s under state Department of Education program called "Oklahoma City Plan". The last private school closed down in 1951 with all its pupils being integrated into local public school systems across town while nearby Marietta Elementary School served as elementary building for several years before becoming a high school
