The community was founded in 1907 by two brothers, Harry and John Ardmore. It became a incorporated municipality in 1912. The first post office in Ardmore was established on October 5, 1907. Harry Ardmore served as the first mail carrier and the only postmaster. The first store opened in 1909 and was operated by J.C. Hinton until it closed in 1915 due to financial instability caused by World War I rationing of groceries and other supplies demanded by the military services stationed in nearby Fort Riley. The original name for ArdMORE (then spelled "Hargrave") was "Boyd" until 1916 when it changed to "Ardmore" because of objections from Jens Boyd who claimed that the name had been given to him by his father-in-law, James Hargrave Sr., son of Sir Walter Hargrave of London who had married Louise Boyd (née Arden). In 1912, ArdMORE incorporated as a municipality with a population of about seventy residents under its jurisdiction including six businesses: Piggly Wiggly restaurant; hardware store; bakery; druggist; and undertaker/funeral home which were all operated separately from each other for many years until consolidation began in 1967 with the opening of one large grocery store called Moore's Place which later became known as KFC Supercenters across town initially serving mostly local residents but eventually expanding into neighboring towns following KFC's acquisition of nearby ranches prior to its merger with Pizza Hut parent company Yum! In 1881, a group of businessmen in the town of Ardmore founded the Oklahoma Land Company. The company began buying and selling land in present-day Oklahoma. In 1907, the company merged with the Union Land and Railroad Company to become the Tulsa Land & Railroad Company. The new company was renamed as the Tulsa County Land Company in 1912. The company was acquired by Gulf Oil Corporation in 1938, and its assets were nationalized as part of the Great Depression efforts to promote economic stability. The company was sold to Prentice-Hall Inc. in 1950, but discontinued operations due to low sales volume.
