Ardmore is a town in Noble County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 2,651 at the 2010 census. Ardmore is the county seat of Noble County. It lies on the Arkansas River and has a latitude of 36°28′N / 3°10′W and longitude of 97°24′W / -97.8′N / -97.2′W. The first post office in Ardmore was established on December 17, 1884, by Fenton Wagoner. The present post office building was built in 1911; it is a two-story cream-colored brick structure with a red weatherboarded facade. The town began as an agricultural community and rapidly became an important center for trade and commerce in Noble County during the19th century. During that time, many prominent people were born or grew up in Ardmore: George Bird Griggs (1812–1892), James Guthrie (1827–1900), Olin Blythe (1868–1939), Averill Harriman (1898–1977),Clarence Halsey Fowler (1901–1983), Eldridge Kilgore (1920–1988). During World War II, Ardmore played an important role as a manufacturing center for munitions production in Noble County. More than 1,000 businesses were closed due to wartime shortages of materials but Ardmore still managed to remain one of the most active communities within the war zone despite having little contact with combat troops stationed nearby. After the war ended, several small towns throughout Noble County began to decline as industrial output declined and jobs were lost to other counties in neighboring states or abroad. However, because ArdMORE had remained relatively unaffected by these changes and its residents had continued to contribute significant amounts of money towards local community projects such as agriculture and culture, it slowly regained its former prosperity through new investment and commercial development over the ensuing decades. In recent years however there have been efforts underway by some residents to revive aspects of downtown ArdMORE while also preserving its historical significance; this has led to mixed results however given that much progress has been made without prior approval from city officials

In 1898, the Ardmore Indian Agent office was unofficially established in what is now the city of Ardmore. The office helped to resolve disputes between the tribe and white settlers. The city of Ardmore was founded on November 3, 1907 by a group of businessmen led by J.M. Dunn. The town was named after General John Maney, who had died in action during World War I. On January 1, 1912, the first school in Ardmore opened its doors to students. That year also saw the incorporation of the city into the Oklahoma Territory. On December 15, 1916, an act was passed that united all Indian reservations in Oklahoma under one government entity known asthe "Oklahoma National Forest".
