Gun sights have been a part of Ardmore, Oklahoma since the early 1800s. The first sights in the area were simple crosshairs that could be seen from a distance. These rudimentary sight systems were used to point firearms at targets in order to shoot them. The first permanent gunsight system in Ardmore was erected by Captain John Hargrave in 1868. This system consisted of two circles with different height settings and sighting points located on opposite sides of a large barrel. It was not until 1875 that an accurate, elevated gun sight system was erected by Major James A. Whitehead. This system consisted of three circles with different height settings and sighting points located on either side of a small barrel. It took about two years for this new type of gun sight to become fully accepted within the Ardmore community. In 1876, Captain Hargrave donated land to the town for the erection of a military parade ground and drill field known as Fort Hargrave Field or simply Fort Hargrave Road today). The first permanent rifle range in Ardmore was constructed on this site in 1879 by Major James A. Whitehead and it remained in use until 1904 when it was decommissioned and converted into housing units1). In 1916, Captain Wm Sutherlin donated land adjacent to Fort Hargrave Road for the erection of an airfield which would later become known as Norman Air Force Base2). Today, these structures still stand as part of Norman Air Force Base’s property3). Ardmore is a small town in Osage County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tulsa Metropolitan Area. Ardmore was founded by settlers in 1872 and named for John Ardmore, a Representative from Pennsylvania who had settled in that area. The first post office in Ardmore was established on November 15, 1872. The name of the town originated with John Ardmore and it has been spelled "Ardmore" since its incorporation into Osage County on July 11, 1907. The present day courthouse building was built in 1909 and is one of only two original buildings remaining from the town's early days. One of the earliest businesses in ArdMORE was the Blacksmith Shop which operated from 1872-1873 under license from Ulysses S. Grant who then served as Postmaster General for Oklahoma Territory. The shop became known as "The forge" because it produced high quality items such as saddles and horseshoes with ease due to its location within walking distance of many homes. In 1875-76 William Hinton opened what became known as Hinton's general store which soon became a popular spot for buying goods near downtown ArdMORE. By 1890 most residents of ArdMORE lived near downtown or within five miles of either side of US Highway 66 where they could get their groceries and other needs delivered to their doorsteps every morning without having to leave their homes! By 1910 there were over 100 businesses operating in ArnMORE with more than 60% being located inside city limits! This growth did not stop at business fronts however; many residents enjoyed spending time outdoors enjoying nature offerings such as fishing, hunting and hiking opportunities available just outside the city limits! In 1905 Arthur Payson formed Payson & Sons Hardware Store which became one of Osage County's most successful commercial ventures during this era! After years Of hard work PAZON & SONS HC closed its doors in 1962 but not before leaving an indelible mark on local retail history! Today you can find remnants of PAZON'S BUSINESSES throughout downtown Arnomore including his old blacksmith shop (now used as a residential property), his later fitness center/gym (now called Palace Health) and even his now long gone original grocery store!!!
