In 1907, when Noble County was created from parts of Haskell County, Ardmore became its county seat. It has since been renamed several times including for railroad magnate Andrew Mellon (1857–1936) in 1928; banker/pioneer J P Morgan & Co., Ltd.(1905–1974) in 1944; MacArthur Barracks National Military Park during World War II; and finally Ardmore National Laboratory following the establishment of the U.S. Department of Energy's Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in 1978. Today's economy revolves around government services such as education and healthcare resources located within Noble University's Campus Village District; trucking services supplied by United Parcel Service Inc.; agricultural production with support from Archer Daniels Midland Company; manufacturing with companies such as Ford Motor Company and Boeing Co.; as well as other businesses that provide goods or services to residents or are based within walking distance of the city center or campus district

The city grew rapidly due to its significance as both an industrial center and cultural Mecca forOklahomaians during the 1920s and 1930s. During World War II, Ardmore played an important role as one of Tulsa’s primary production centers for munitions products such as tanks, planes, artillery shells and naval guns. Many local businessmen also profited from this activity; some are still remembered today such as Jock Mahoney who built Mahoney’s Bar & Grill in downtown Ardmore (now closed). Other notable landmarks include Eastman Kodak’s Smithery Workshed No 5B which manufactured Kodak film from 1915 until 1957; and Arbuckle Saloon where President Harry Truman stopped his presidential journey on October 16th 1948 while visiting Tulsa Glen Helen Hospital across the street from Arbuckle Brewery (now defunct).
The City of Ardmore was founded in 1887 by men who had come to the area from eastern Oklahoma. The city grew rapidly, becoming an important center for trade and commerce. In 1907, the city voters adopted a charter that made it an incorporated municipality. The following year, Ardmore became a state capital.
