In 1912-14, the town hosted the Republican National Convention which helped to improve its reputation as a GOP stronghold.
The town of Ardmore was founded in 1907 by John W. Haskell. The post office was first opened in 1909, and the town became a city in 1915. In 1920, the city annexed the village of Watertown, and in 1927 the city annexed the villages of North and South Ardmore. The city was renamed Ardmore on October 1, 1929, after its mayor, George C. Marshall.
