Ardmore is a small town in Butler County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,512 at the 2010 census. Ardmore is part of the Tulsa metropolitan area. The first mention of Ardmore can be found on December 10, 1907 when J.C. White and W.H. Green established a post office in the town with two mailbags each week. On July 6, 1912, the name of the post office was changed to Ardmore after an investment by John A. Ardmore who built a sawmill and gristmill in the community later that year. The mill continued operation until 1954 when it was destroyed by fire caused by an overloading of flour stocks from nearby Pawnee City (). In 1904, there were only 12 residents in Ardmore and most residents worked for their families or farms outside the community; however, within five years all farming had been abandoned due to droughts and changes in weather patterns which caused increased flooding throughout much of central Oklahoma during that time period; this contributed to many homes being abandoned as well as businesses closing up shop during this time period because people could not get food or money to rebuild what had been lost (). On November 5th 1908 local school board member Mrs Ethel Lubbock donated land south of town along US 41 for a public school which would serve students from surrounding towns including: Jenks (north), Owsley (west), Bartlett (south), Stillwater (east) and Guthrie (northeast). After almost one year’s construction work completed on October 25th 1909 classes started for grades one through twelve at what would become known as “Mrs Lubbocks School” (). In 1911 second grade began operations at another school called “Pioneer East” (); both schools were eventually closed due to lack of enrollment so that ArdMORE could become its own municipality with its own government funds in 1916(). This move towards independence would come full circle as on July 1st 1922 ArdMORE incorporated under state law as a city governed by a mayor/council system with five members elected at-large instead of individual property owners () − making it one of just six cities in Oklahoma to do so after 1907 (). Initially known simply as “ArdMORE” citizens quickly renamed their new city after some key individuals associated with its early development such as Mayor Hulbert Hargrave (), Superintendent George Fenton (), Agriculture Commissioner Curtis Gillett (), Businessman James Cook () and many more ().
