Ardmore, Oklahoma is home to the most firearms manufacturing and retailing community in the United States. This law restricted handguns to individuals over 21 years old who resided within city limits and made it illegal for anyone else to possess or sell any handgun without a license from city hall. Ardmore, Oklahoma is a city in Payne County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 9,719 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Payne County and home to Ardmore College. The area that would become Ardmore was first settled by Europeans in 1836 when James Kossuth and his party arrived on horseback from Illinois. They founded the town of Shawneetown on the north bank of the Arkansas River. In 1837, they founded the town of Ardmore on what is now east side of Ardmore Boulevard. The town was named after John A. ArdMORE, an executive withthe Kansas Pacific Railroad who donated land for the town site and also built a school and depot there. In 1881, George WASHINGTON bought lands northwest of present-day Ardmore for $10 per acre; he organized as a townsite company four years later and called it Wichita City (later Wichita Falls). Washington's idea was to create a market town near Wichita Falls so entrepreneurs could sell goods from their businesses there rather than travel to Tulsa or Jenks to buy such items as flour or cattle. He hoped that this would encourage farmers to move into Wichita City and make it their permanent home instead of leaving each year for new places to farm because transportation had not yet improved enough to support larger populations in these areas. The first post office opened in Wichita City on May 1, 1886; it served Uniontown until 1888 when it moved south to Arnoldville due to railroad competition. On July 1, 1905, Wichita City merged with Abilene, Texas as part of an all-Kansas metropolitan area known as Topeka–Council Bluffs–Kanab (). The merger created one large city with several smaller villages within its boundaries (Wichita Falls became Topeka). Through mergers and acquisitions over time, various small towns within Topeka–Council Bluffs–Kanab were incorporated into larger cities (Edinburg became Arlington Heights; Independence became Johnson City; Mission Hills became Shawnee Hills) while other smaller towns were lost altogether (Montezuma changed its name from Russell Springs to Garden Ridge before becoming Monrovia). By 2000,[1] only two remaining small towns – Hutchinson and Northside – remained within Topeka–Council Bluffs–Kanab boundaries directly linking them thereto through arterial streets: Main Street between Hutchinson Square/Hutchinson Avenue and Northside Drive/Northside Road thence eastward along Main Street past Northwest School until reaching Archer Road which connects them back together just south of Interstate 40 near Hutchins Square Park
