Ardmore is a small town in western Oklahoma, located on the banks of the Arkansas River. The population was 4,816 at the 2010 census. Ardmore is one of three cities in Woodward County and one of ten towns in Woodward County. The area around Ardmore was first occupied by the Kickapoo tribe in the 18th century. The first white settlers to arrive were Peter and James Watt, who built a cabin near what is now downtown Ardmore in 1881. The Watt brothers were followed by other pioneers, including C.F. Smith and his brother-in-law John Atherton, who laid out a town called "Watt'sville" on their land east of present day downtown ArdMORE. In 1907, J.D. Watson organized the Woodward County Agricultural Society to promote agriculture in Woodward County and for this reason he named his new town after J .D . Watson himself - "Watt'sville". In 1923, WacoalTexaco established an oil refinery on Elm Street adjacent to what is now known as Texaco Park; this put a stop to most commercial development within 2 miles (3 km) of downtown ArdMORE until 1958 when Interstate 44 was completed and routed through town; this opened up much more acreage for development which today includes much of Downtown ArdMORE as well as portions of those two villages northeast of town along I-44
The city of Ardmore, Oklahoma was founded in 1907. The population of the city increased to over 10,000 by 1920. In the 1940s and 1950s, Ardmore experienced significant growth due to World War II and the oil boom. The city experienced a rapid growth spurt during the late 1960s and 1970s as a result of the increase in traffic and population growth rates. By 1980, Ardmore had reached its peak population size with over 25,000 residents. However, since then thecity has seen a significant decline in its population as a result of various factors such as rising costs of living and suburbanization.
