In the early 1900s, Ardmore was a small community located in what is now eastern Oklahoma. The population of Ardmore at that time was only around 100 people and there were no schools. However, because of its location and lack of resources, the community began to prosper thanks to binoculars. Binoculars became very important during the early 1800s because they allowed people to see much more detail than they could with just their eyes. Binoculars also allowed for a greater range of vision when hunting or fishing because they allowed you to pick out objects up close while looking away from them. early 18th century: A group of settlers in present-day Ardmore discovered oil shale near the town in 1848. This discovery led to new interests in land and development within the community and soon enough,binoculars had become quite popular among local residents. By 1860, binocular sales had increased so much that a store was established within the settlement itself. By 1865, Ardmore had become one of the most important towns in East Texas due to its importance as an oil center. 1890: Due to increasing demand for binoculars from farmers throughout East Texas, a company called Samuel Goodrich & Company was founded in 1890 by two friends who decided to start an optical business on Central Avenue in Ardmore. The company quickly became successful and soon began selling binoculars door-to-door throughout Eastern Oklahoma

Ardmore is named after James Fenton Arden, an early settler. The first post office in Ardmore was established in 1881. The original name of the town was Indianola, but it was changed to Ardmore because of its resemblance to Yuma, Arizona. The peak population of Ardmore was 1,500 in 1960; however, by 2000 the population had declined to 1,119 people. In 1907 Benjamin Hemon opened a general store and soon became known as one of Ardmore's largest merchants and also its political leader. He served as mayor from 1912 to 1916 and 1918 to 1921. Ardmore is a town in southern Oklahoma, bordered by the Canadian River to the east and west and by the Wichita Mountains to the north. The population of Ardmore was 5,834 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tulsa metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Ardmore were French traders in 1795. The first settlers arrived in 1867, when land grant from President Andrew Johnson was issued to George Lummis and James Hinton. The town site was surveyed by Ebenezer Elliott and named for him, but no post office ever opened because it took too long for mail delivery from Canada. A train stop on U.S. Route 66 served as an early community center; however, this soon became obsolete with the arrival of trucks and buses that made Dawson City accessible from Ardmore within a few minutes’ ride. In 1949, during World War II when many people were drafted into military service or went off to fight overseas, Ardmore became home to one of two production plants operated by DuPont Rubber Company (now Monsanto). This plant manufactured rubber products used in tires and other products such as ship anchors and car seats; it also made munitions including artillery shells and small arms ammunition while producing little else besides rubber products until DuPont closed its plant in 1984 due to competition from foreign companies who had moved into North America during that time period. The Stroud-owned company which operated both plants until 1984 continued manufacturing munitions until it ceased operations due to new technologies being developed more quickly thanDuPont could match; this left both plants vacant for many years after which they began decaying.- American Metal Supply Co., Inc., later known as Superior Metals Corporation purchased both plants for $4 million in 1987; at that time Superior Metals Corporation decided not to renew their lease on either plant because they found other opportunities available in Tulsa where their product lines would be better suited.- The two abandoned plants sat derelict until they were taken over by local residents who started Restoration Initiatives Incorporated (RII) In 1990 RII obtained a National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) waiver allowing them unprecedented access thereto under ARDMORE COMMUNITY PROTECTION ACT regulations.; restoration efforts culminated with conversion of both abandoned plants into low-income housing using green roofs technology After much hard work over several years by volunteers as well as city officials, all three structures have now been restored back into their original condition.- A ribbon cutting ceremony marking completion of these projects took place on October 16th 2009

In 1916 the town incorporated and began to develop its own economy. The first store in the town was opened by J.C. Goodyear. The town built a school in 1922 and a post office in 1923. By 1925 the town had an estimated population of 300 people. In 1929 the Tulsa tornado destroyed much of Ardmore, killing over 50 people. After the tornado, many businesses closed down and residents were left without work or money to rebuild their homes. However, Ardmore did not stop growing; within 5 years it had increased its population to 1,500 people. In 1937 the towns charter was amended so that it could elect its own officials instead of being appointed by the state government. This change allowed for more growth and development within Ardmore; businesses started opening up and newresidential areas were developed such as Park Boulevard and North First Street NW. In 1952, Ardmore incorporation changed its name to Sheridan County when county commissioners decided that the name sounded more like Oklahoma than Sheridan County (which at that time included most of what is now Tulsa). The towns continued to grow rapidly; by 1964 they had reached 3,000 residents living in area known as Central City which is located on today's corner of State Road 410 SW and Third Street NW
