Ardmore, Oklahoma is a small town located in Muskogee County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. Ardmore is part of the Tulsa metropolitan area. The first people to live in what is now Ardmore were Athabascans who migrated from Southwestern Spain in the late fifteenth century. They built their villages on high ground overlooking the Arkansas River and hunted game there until they gradually lost access to it as new thornsy hills rose along its banks. Eventually they moved westward and found other areas with rich hunting and fishing resources so they began to cultivate land hereabouts. In 1881, James Aitken purchased 640 acres (2 km²) of land east of Ardmore from John Hatton for $10 per acre ($140 per kilometer). He named his property "Athabasca." It was later renamed after his brother-in-law, David Robertson Aitken, who also founded Haskell City near Edmond in 1907. Ardmore's early years were indistinct because it was not part of any formal county government until 1890 when Muskogee County was organized from portions of Tulsa and Osage counties by an act of the General Assembly. The courthouse stood on Third Street between Elm and Magnolia Streets from 1890 until 1903 when it burned down; this event is generally cited as the origin of ArdMORE's name which means "meeting place" or "assembly hall." The first post office opened in 1893.; originally called Nacogdoches but changed to ArdMORE due to its similarity to Canadian towns such as Montreal and Toronto.- Next door on Second Street lived Wm Fenton until 1902 when he sold his house () next door to present day Masonic Temple where he still resides today as aVisitor Center operator.- First school building which served students grades one through twelve was erected on East Main Street in 1912.- Today's Post Office Building (now used as a library) was built on West Main Street between chainsaws Illustrated Newspaper Store (now demolished) and Taco Bell around 1955.- Originally just two buildings: one store/cafeteria and one school; both were Later enlarged into four buildings before being razed for firewood about 1970- original bushy trees that lined 3rd street near present day soccer field were cut down about 1990- This grassy oval shaped park currently occupies that spot.- Nowadays only traceable evidence remains behind those trees
