The name " Altus" comes from an early settler's place-name of "Allatoona." The first post office in Altus was established on July 8, 1881. The present post office building was built in 1903 by J.M. Hennessey and dedicated on October 25 of that year. The original store burned down in 1907 but was rebuilt and became the first general store in Altus when it opened its doors again on November 10, 1907. In 1911 the Altus School District was organized and all local schools were consolidated into one school system which became known as Noble County Community Schools District No. 2 (later Noble County Schools District #1). In 1916 the railroad line between Tulsa and Jenks ran through Altus so the town started to become more developed with stores, hotels and other businesses opening up along Railroad Avenue which later became called Main Street. One of these businesses was Harry Wertheimer's Liquor Store which had its beginnings back in 1902 when Harry Wertheimer bought land northwest of downtown to open a grocery store and service his customers outbuildings located near what is now Farmers Insurance Arena off First Street south of Railroad Avenue. For many years this business operated as one of only two small grocery shops remaining in downtownAltus after most other businesses closed during prohibition era because they could not compete with large liquor stores throughout Tulsa proper! In 1951 Altus voters approved a referendum for incorporation into the city limits of Tulsa creating a new form of government for their community which still exists today as an elected body within city limits governed by Councilmembers having full authority over all things pertaining to City operations including budgeting, zoning restrictions etc...On December 3rd 1951 Mayor John Gorman signed an ordinance establishing altustownoung men aged 21 or older who resided within 50 miles radius formed committees to develop plans for developing commercial activity within their town Limits should annexation be granted by Tulsa due to increasing populationdensity within city limits while also seeking funds necessary for such development from county coffers; these plans were eventually realized with construction beginning shortly thereafter on what would become known as Broadway Square Shopping Center while also initiating redevelopment/renovation/landscaping efforts currently underway adjacent to Farmers Insurance Arena calling it Park Place!
