Altus, Oklahoma is a small city located in the Kiowa County seat of Haskell. The population was 2,868 at the 2010 census. Altus is the smallest town in Kiowa County and has only one store and one restaurant. The first settlers in Altus were people who came overland from Kansas in 1867. They built a log cabin on the banks of the Arkansas River and called it "New Beginnings." Many other pioneers also moved to Altus during that time, including my father, Charles Easley (1892-1976). His family started out as farmers and ranchers, moving their operation up Arkansas River until they bought 1,500 acres of land around what is now Altus in 1937. My father's involvement with ranching led him to be very hands-on with his community - he always wanted to make sure that everyone had access to good education and opportunity. He also helped create what today is known as the "Easley School District." This district served all of Haskell County until 1974 when it became part of the larger Oklahoma City school district. Today, there are about 160 businesses in Altus - many of which are centered around its two stores and one restaurant. The city has seen an increase in its population recently due to new development near downtown and along Highway 66; however, much like most small towns across America, job growth will likely slow down once baby boomers retire or move away. Despite this challenge, however, Altus remains an active community that enjoys a vibrant culture and lively nightlife

The first pastor of Altus United Church of Christ officiated at that dedication. In 1916, the name of the church was changed to First Baptist Church of Altus and it still uses that name today. The economy of Altus has been largely agricultural since its founding; however, over time it has diversified into several businesses including manufacturing (most notably cigars), retail trade (including small grocery stores), and services such as law enforcement and ambulance service. The community is home to several parks including Main Park which features a playground and baseball diamonds; Blue Grass Park which includes tennis courts; Battleground Park with a football field; and Mount Zion Cemetery which contains graves for both local residents and soldiers from World War I to World War II. In recent years there have been efforts made to commemorate aspects of local history through various events such as art exhibits or historical tours/trips during special occasions like Fourth Of July or Christmas
