By 1945, pistol ownership had become fully legal within the city limits of Altus. In 1949, a rifle range was established inAltus and continues to operate today.. In 1975-1976, a hunting festival took place which featured both open air shootings as well asAnderson Valley deer hunting with .22 caliber rifles.. Beginning in 1984-1985 an annual music festival called "The Big Four" took place at Big Lake Park which included concerts by country artists like Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard among other performers
Altus is a small town in the US state of Oklahoma. It is located on the Altus River, about 20 miles east of Tulsa. The population was 1,230 at the 2010 census. The name "Altus" comes from the Algonquian word “altawa” meaning "place where game is hunted." The first settler in what is now Altus was John Bogue in 1881. In 1907, an oil well was drilled in what would become Altus and two men named Harry Fenton and Wm. Hines discovered oil there. The oil industry began to grow in Altus and by 1951, it had reached a peak with over 100 businesses employing over 1,000 people. However, by the early 1970s the oil industry had started to decline and due to this decline, many businesses closed their doors or merged with others throughout that decade. By the early 1990s most of these closures had happened and as a result of this economic decline, Altus became one of the poorest towns inOKlahoma fiscally speaking." However, things have begun to change for Altus since 2000 when they were chosen as one of sixteen communities within Oklahoma City's Comprehensive Renewal Plan (CRP). This program aimed to improve public infrastructure including education, economic development and environmental protection by creating new jobs across various sectors including business administration and engineering services. Since becoming part of RPC they have seen an increase in job opportunities as wells as: an increase in home ownership; growth in cultural events such as art shows and music festivals; developing new parks;and attracted investment from several large companies such as Dow Chemical Co., BP America Inc., Microsoft Corporation et al who are now responsible for much of downtown's skyline redevelopment projects which has led to increased commercial activity around town center area making it easier for visitors to get around while still maintaining its residential character".
