Business picked up again from 1971-1980 due to oil production at nearby Anadarko Petroleum Company In 1984-1987the city experienced a decline as residents moved out to larger towns or cities because of cheap housing prices available in those areas. However, starting around 2000 things began to change as businesses reopened and investment returned to Altus

Altus, Oklahoma is a town in Muskogee County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 2,512 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Muskogee County and the home to Altus Air Force Base. The Altus post office was established in 1907 and closed in 1951. As of the 2010 census, there were 2,512 people living in Altus Township and 1,879 living in Altus City. The first settler in what is now Altus was George A. Turner who arrived on July 12, 1881 with his family from Bostonport Massachusetts. He built a cabin on the edge of present-day Muskogee Lake along side current US 95 south of present-day Altus Air Force Base. Turner's cabin remains standing today as a historic landmark known as "Turner's Cabin". In 1907, Robert Hinton founded an agricultural business called Hinton Bros., which still exists today as an agricultural dealership on US 87 north of town. In 1919, he donated land east of town for use as a military airfield known then as "Altus Field". The airfield served as a training ground for American pilots during World War I and World War II before becoming operational as an RAF station known later simply as RAF Altona after its closure in 1946. In 1951, the post office located within present day Altus City was discontinued due to its small population and growing importance within the community; however it continued to be used until 1994 when it finally closed completely following changes to postal service regulations that excluded towns with populations under 10 thousand from receiving mail service (the last post office operating within Muskogee County). As part of numerous economic development efforts throughout recent decades including major construction projects such as reconstruction of RAF Altona into an international airport serving Tulsa and nearby cities; various retail businesses have sprung up around downtownAltus including several high-end stores such as Neiman Marcus; while also developing significant acreage close to downtown through annexation by other municipalities resulting in vast new development opportunities for local residents; many aspects associated with early 20th century rural life continue unchanged or are even increasing in popularity such as farm values being highly Stillwater Springs real estate has seen lively growth since 2001 when it purchased three adjacent farms totaling over 106 acres making it one of the largest tracts ever offered for sale outside Oklahoma City metropolitan area; while altustown retains much character & history despite no mail service providing residents with updated information about their community
