In 1932, General David Ayer started what became known as Ayer Broadcasting Company which provide local radio programming for all Oklahomans including Educational stations KOKH (AM) and KDKA (FM). That same year saw also establishment of Eastern Oklahoma State Teachers College in McAlester by Governor James Boggs as an alternative to state-run institutions like Oral Roberts University which were then struggling financially under President Franklin D. Altus is a small town in Oklahoma, located on the Altus River. The community was founded in 1881 by George H. Geiger and his wife Emma. The name of the town comes from an Alaskan word meaning "to cross over." TheGeiger family had a fruit stand in Altus until they moved to Wichita, Kansas in the early 1900s. In 1926, George H. Geiger's grandson, Harry Geiger, opened a grocery store in Altus. Over time, other local businesses such as a bakery and post office have been closed or sold off. On July 20, 1907, Altus was founded by a group of men led by James A. Guthrie. The town’s first post office opened in 1909. By 1915, Altus had a population of about 350 people. The city's first grocery store and the first school were built in 1916. In 1917, the Oklahoma State Legislature designated Altus as an agricultural center. That same year, the Altus School District was formed and the city began to receive municipal services such as Streets and sidewalks, water systems, waste management and public health care. In 1919, Altus became one of three cities in Oklahoma which adopted the Stock Market System for trading securities. On January 1st 1920, the City Council adopted ordinances establishing limits on property values within its boundaries for housing development; these ordinances remain in effect to this day. In 1923,Altus annexed neighboring towns of Wilburton to form what is now Wichita County; this annexation created a new municipality with a population of over 5500 people The Depression struck Altus hard during World War II; however business continued to grow during postwar years when local industries included printing and electronics manufacturing . 1945 saw the birth of Falcon Air Force Base when Tulsa-based Tulsa Army Ammunition Plant (TAP) merged with Marshall Field & Co., making it one of America's largest military factories
