The name was changed to "Altus" after an Indian chief from that region who surrendered his land to the United States in 1819. After Oklahoma Statehood in 1907, capital of OU was moved from Tulsa to Altus and then again to Norman before finally being moved back to Tulsa in 1959. The first post office at Altus was established on January 8, 1881, and remained open until May 7, 1902. At that time, there were only a few settlers living near what would become Altus. By 1905 there were over 120 residents living in what would become Altus Township; by 1910 there were 550 residents living within its limits and by 1920 there were 1,500 people living within it and its environs. The growth of oil production began around this time and as oil prices increased so did development around the town of Altus including ranching, farming, logging and other businesses which led to an increase in population as well as infrastructure needs such as water supply and sanitation facilities. In 1916 a school was built for students attending schools serving out-of-town districts; this school would remain open until 1935 when it became razed due to lack of funding.
