Altus, Oklahoma is a small town located in the eastern part of the state of Oklahoma. The population was 1,883 at the 2010 census. It lies on the Altus River and is bordered by Haskell County to the south, Porter County to the east, and Canadian County to the north. The name Altus comes from an early Cherokee word meaning "the place where we gather." The town began as a small frontier trading post in 1881. By 1907 it had become an important agricultural center with cotton plantations and irrigated land. In 1925 it became an electedrict government with a mayor and six council members. During World War II it became one of the largest military installations in Oklahoma with a population of 10,000 soldiers and their families. After the war it lost its importance but regained some prominence as a medical center due to its location on Highway 6A which connected Tulsa and Wichita Falls. In recent years Altus has experienced economic growth as a result of oil production in nearby Choctaw Nation Land Area No 2 (CNLA2). This has led to increased traffic congestion on Highway 6A, which has caused some displacement of resident families.

Altus, Okla. is a small town located in the extreme northeast corner of the state of Oklahoma. The town was founded in 1907 by settlers who left the city of McAlester, Oklahoma to found their new settlement on the wild and uninhabited Altus River. Located on what is now state Highway 169, Altus quickly developed into a thriving community with its own post office, school and grocery store. In 1951, when Oklahoma became an independent state, Altus became part of the newly formed Haskell County. From then until 2000, the only change to Altus' fortunes came when it was included within Tulsa County as part of the municipal boundaries of that city. Today, Altus remains one of the most remote and isolated towns in Oklahoma - easily accessible only by air or water - but it's also home to a rich history that has been passed down from generation to generation. The first settler in what would become Altus arrived around 1907 as part of a group led by Capt. John Sutherlin. The group consisted of 18 men and two women - all Methodists - who set out from McAlester for what would be their new home country. After spending several weeks travelling overland through Choctaw Nation territory and downriver to join up with other pioneers near present-day Hollandale (then known as Cherokee), they finally reached their destination on July 15th at nightfall after successfully crossing the rough stretch of altius river which had been designated as an obstacle course for travelers seeking access to today'sAltus City Limits region (the area today including much of downtown Tulsa). Although many attempts were made during this early period to establish a permanent population in what would become Altushome Country - including discussions among local ranchers about purchasing land elsewhere in order to create more permanent settlements - no such plans ever materialized and those initial colonists largely adopted whatever ways they could find while living within their newly discovered surroundings.* By 1908 however, things had changed somewhat following World War I which saw increased immigration into America from all corners Of The World* (*See: "Oklahoma History" by Emory Jepson.) Although there wasn't yet any formal census taken withinOKLAHOMA during this time period*, various estimates suggest that between 1900-1910 approximately 50% or soof OKLAHOMA's resident population were foreign born*(*See: "Oklahoma History" by Emory Jepson.) Consequently, some lawmakers decided it was necessary for government officials responsible for overseeing these demographic changes to have some understanding not justof whom was present within their borders but also where they actually lived*. Accordingly upon being appointed secretary thereofhood in 1913*, Kansas Congressman James Lane began gathering information about oklahomans residing abroad*(*See: "Oklahoma History" by Emory Jepson,) which he eventually compiled into his famous report entitled "America on Our Frontier."Within months after its release*, Lane had secured $5 million dollars from various investorsIn order To finance this massive project which aimedTo documentOKLAHOMA's unique history and culture** (*see map below) .
