The first store in Altus was the IrishIndependent Store, which opened on Main Street in 1907. In 1912, a school was built; it became the First Baptist Church of Altus in 1945. In 1937, a sawmill opened on Cline Creek and soon produced lumber for use inside and outside of Altus. In 1959, an oil refinery began production nearby and increased demand for lumber; as a result, the sawmill closed down in 1961. Lumber production stopped again around 1990 due to environmental concerns but resumed two years later when fracking started occurring near Altus (fracking is an energy extraction process using water injection to break down shale formations). As a result of this new industry development, more jobs have been created than ever before within the walls ofAltus Community High School – now home to over 1,100 students from all fifty states who attend its single-story brick building that seats more than 350 people!
