The Altus area was first settled by Europeans in the 1820s as part of what would become Choctaw Nation. The town was founded on February 17, 1907 by farmers from nearby Jonesboro and Duncanville who were looking for land to settle after selling their crops and homesteading near Tulsa. It was named after General George Armstrong Custer, who had died in battle two years earlier while leading his unit into battle against Native American forces at Little Bighorn. In 1916, when World War I began, Altus became headquarters for OKLAHOMA National Guard units serving in France and Belgium. During the war altus also grew quickly with new housing developments being built along with businesses such as a munitions plant and an armaments store. After the war ended, many of these businesses went out of business but some such as Altshuler's Department Store continued to operate until 1971 when it closed its doors for good due to lack of customers or competition from larger stores downtown. During the early days of Oklahoma Statehood there were few settlements other than those within Indian Territory so much focus was placed on developing what would become OKLAHOMA County which included present-day Altus City Limits. AfterOklahoma Statehood this changed with men like James Gorman coming up with ideas for towns outside Indian Territory and soon enough there were towns throughout Indian Territory including Wichita Falls (1924), Muskogee (1927), Jenks (1928), Norman (1929), Shawnee Heights (1930) & more! Altus wasn’t always thriving though due largely to its location on top of a hill which made agriculture difficult; however during World War II things changed as farmland around town dried up making way for growth in industry including defense manufacturing plants such as Altshuler’s Department Store which reopened after 1945 following WWII . In 1955 Altus became home to OU’s first football stadium – Stillman Stadium – followed by Edmondson Stadium later that year before becoming home to NCAA Division I football beginning play at Dowling Stadium in 1999 where it still stands today! An interesting fact about all this growth is that not once during any given period did either house strain or annexation occur meaning that even when homes started popping up next door they were all allowed through zoning laws! This rarity has led some historians to believe that “altuscity [was] almost immune […]to suburbanification”[1]. While this may be true overall there have been recent instances where housing development has crept up behind established businesses although no plans have yet been announced so far for relocation or demolition! Altus, Oklahoma is a town in Haskell County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 910 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tulsa metropolitan area. The Altus post office has been in operation since 1907. The first people to settle in what is now Altus were the Comanches and Kiowa American Indians. The town was founded on December 2, 1903 by J.F. Barnes as a trading post between Wichita Falls, Texas and Quanah Creek Indian Agency west of present day Altus. In 1904, Barnes donated land for a school which opened in 1905 and becameknown as "Barnes High School". The first store built in Altus was the JB’s grocery store which operated from 1907-1911. In 1912, Agris Mills started manufacturing flour at their facility until it closed in 1957 due to economic reasons. In 1913, the first school building was erected on what is now Main Street with classes starting September 14th that yeargrades one through twelve serving students from both public and private schools throughout Haskell County including altus high school which opened its doors on October 1st that year. On November 15th of that year local merchants gathered together to form the “Altus Merchants Association” with a meeting being held at The Painted Lady Inn on First Street to discuss various business concerns such as grain prices and trade regulations affecting eastern Kansas farmers selling western Oklahoma products during this period known as “the Dust Bowl” also known for extreme drought conditions across much of North America causing widespread crop failure resulting in up to 25% mortality rates among livestock during those years especially among cattle due primarily to lack of feed etc.. On February 10th 1914 an agreement was reached between representatives from several eastern Kansas towns (Muncie Springs Junction), Shawnee Mission OK., Garden City KS., Wichita Falls TX., Bartlesville OK., Duncan OK., Geary CO., Newton MO./and McAlester NE/to form the Wichita-Oklahoma Cotton Belt Railway Company/later renamedparamount Western Railway company withAltus as its headquarterline city along with other cities located along its tracks including Guthrie OK./on March 12th 1914 when main line opened passenger service began between Tulsa Okla./Chandler Ariz./ Scotts Valley Calif./New York City Pennsylvanian stations
The town of Altus, Oklahoma was founded in 1907 by F.H. Baldwin and his family. The first post office was established in Altus on October 25, 1907. The town grew rapidly due to the railroad and oil businesses that began operations in the area. In 1915, Altus became a city and was renamed after George Washington Baldwin Sr., one of the founders of the town.
