The city began as an agricultural community in 1907 and became a town in 1909. The name Altus comes from the Choctaw word "al'itus" meaning "a place where there is abundant fruit." The first post office opened in 1911. In 1951, the town of Altus merged with the city of Tulsa to form one municipality. The Altus Lumber Company was founded in 1912 by Harlan Heston and J.B. Finch as a sawmill on the east side of town near present-day Interstate 45 and US 81/231st Street. By 1926, the company had outgrown its mill site and built a new mill on SW Fourth Avenue, north of downtown Altus. A second lumber plant was built northeast of downtown on SW Third Avenue between 1953 and 1955; it was closed when local demand for wood declined and Output dropped below average because of competition from mills outside Tulsa that could build cheaper lumber using more advanced equipment than Altus ever could manage to achieve market share In 1962, voters approved annexation by Tulsa of all but 1 block (northwest corner) of what is now downtown Tulsa due to concerns about future development within 100 blocks (east-west ward) bounded by State Fair Boulevard NE to the south, I-45 traffic coming into Tulsa via US 71/231st Street SE to the west, NW Third Avenue between Elmwood Drive NW and Mulberry Road NW to the northwest (the last undeveloped block), plus parts of east-west wards 3rd Ave NE & 6th Ave NE - making total Tulsans inside 100 blocks annexed which would have been just over 400 people before secession efforts were successful In light Spence's article above it's interesting that prior efforts at annexation failed mainly due less then desirable growth potential inside 100 blocks; also worth noting that this process wasn't unlike those currently taking place throughout Metro Oklahoma through land use planning decisions made by elected officials including but not limited to Oklahoman City Councilors

The economy during this time was based largely on farming, ranching, and mining; however, some businesses did develop such as a grocery store and post office. The population declined slightly during World War II but rebounded once hostilities ended. After that time, the decline continued as residents turned to tourism for income growth; however, Main Street still remains busy with local events and businesses throughout the year.
