Altus is a small town in Russell County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tulsa metropolitan area. The Altus community is located on the Altus-McKinley County line and has a total area of . The first post office in Altus was established in 1887. The name "Altus" was chosen because it means "uppermost." The first store in Altus was built by German immigrants, H. J. Becker and his brother-in-law Wm. Kappenberger, on Main Street near present day US 259 and Gossamer Boulevard. In 1907, a school was built east of present day US 259/Gossamer Boulevard to serve the residents east of Interstate 441 (now I-40). In 1910, the Post Office Building became home to the First Baptist Church which still operates as a Baptist church today with over 2,000 members strong! As more people began arriving in what is now Altus from all over Russell County, businesses sprouted up to support these new arrivals including grocery stores (Amogee Grocery & Creamery), barber shops (Becker Barber Shop & Supply), dry goods stores (Dry Goods Department store), druggists (Drury Druggists) and even an auto service garage! In 1916 when local ranchers boycotted World War I due to opposing sides' beliefs about war then known as "the silent war," many farmers came out to support their political brethren; this led to increased business for local merchants! By 1920 there were 3 businesses represented on Main Street: Amogee Grocery & Creamery; Becker Barber Shop & Supply; and D&H Depot Store which served as Check Cashing Agent for banks!. One of the most significant events that took place during this time period occurred when Mrs. Lila English opened her own grocery store on Court Avenue called English's Emporium which quickly became one of town's most popular attractions with its delicious food items! English's also served as meeting place for township board meetings until building restrictions prevented them from expanding further into town center! In 1928 Mrs. English donated land east of Court Avenue along US 606/McKinley Road so that an additional three businesses could be situated: Dutch Bros., Hardware Store #2 & Czech Bakery (& later Slattery’s BBQ); finally Piggly Wiggly Place would open its doors just north of current day I-240!! With such success stories being experienced by local entrepreneurs during this time period it can perhaps be said that “life wasn't always bad inAltus” !! When WWII started many residents left or were forced out due to military obligations but some who remained stuck behind drafted into military service found themselves without jobs once hostilities ended!! So much so that within weeks of Pearl Harbor being attacked Japan had occupied Manchuria!, making it difficult for any locals living inside Japan proper ever returning home again!!!
